I AM A RETIRED MERCHANT SEAFARER (engine room) and now in my 80’s. In the August 2012 issue of Sea Breezes I read the column ‘From The Lookout’ and found interest in the piece ‘Flavour of the Orient on the Thames’ on the Chinese junk, Huan Tian XI DI stating the Huan Tian is the second traditional Chinese vessel to visit the UK.

JunkThe first Chinese vessel is moored alongside the Maritime Museum in the Scottish east coast fishing port of Eyemouth, a few miles north of Berwick on Tweed. I believe this vessel was built in Hong Kong, sailed to Singapore where she was loaded onto a larger ship for the UK.

Unfortunately the junk at Eyemouth has never ever been painted and is a pitiful sight. There is a fully working shipyard in the port, having two slipways, yet no one seems interested in preservation of this junk.
