ON READING THROUGH the May 2012 issue of Sea Breezes, two pieces bought back memories.
In 1952 I joined my first ship as deck boy. It was a shock; forecastle basic accommodation, deck steering and a coal burner. She was built in Lubeck in Germany before the First World War and given to the Baron Line of Glasgow and sailed as the Baron Forbes.
When reading the story of the Wingatui there was quite a similarity. The other memory brought back to me was the loss of the Princess Victoria. We spent all day searching for survivors. I was a crew member on the Lairds Moor whose captain, James Bell, was awarded the MBE.
