IN THE APRIL 2012 EDITION of Sea Breezes, Mr Shaw enquired for information on the yacht like vessel ss Meteor.
The vessel was built in 1904 by Blohm and Voss, Hamburg for the Hamburg America Line; she was ceded to Great Britain in 1918/1919, and taken over by the Shipping Controller under the management of Royal Mail Steam Packet. She was in use until about 1921 and bought by Bergen Line as a niche cruise ship. They liked her so much they built the Stella Polaris in 1926. One can see in the photograph the two ships are very similar.
I believe that in her couple of year’s service to Great Britain she was used to repatriate or move personnel as sanctioned by HM Government. In 1919 she repatriated officers and their families from Argentina, I’m sure it was likewise from Ceylon, Burma and India. The Germans reacquired her during WWII. She served as a Hospital ship and was sunk in 1945 following an air raid.
It is possible there was a stock of ship postcards available from the vessels HAPAG owner days so it is likely the card was sent circa 1919/1920.
