I was very interested in the article on the Orient Line pre-war passenger liners in the February 2012 issue of Sea Breezes.
It mentions five vessels, but there was a 6th one – Orion. During the ‘off season’ of the London-Australia runs, most of the vessels did cruises from Immingham Docks (near Grimsby) called ‘Cruises to see the Northern Lights’, sailing to north Norway where the views of the Northern Lights were always a wonderful sight.
Trains used to bring passengers right up to the vessels, so it was straight off the train, directly on board and then vice versa. These cruises were very popular. Our family business had strong connections with these vessels, and as a very young lad, I remember visiting the Orford Orontes and the Orion. The latter being the unnamed vessel in the article.
It’s a long time ago but I remember those visits very clearly.
