I was a little saddened to read of Cunard’s switch to the Bermudan registry as reported in ‘Maritime Log’ in the January 2011 edition of Sea Breezes.
On one point, however, you seem to be confusing Bermuda with, perhaps, the Bahamas. Bermuda, like the Isle of Man, is a British Crown Dependency and is thus part of the UK’s overseas territories. As such, ships registered in Bermuda wear the Red Duster. My wife and I have enjoyed a number of cruises in ships registered in Bermuda and they all wear the red ensign, and their senior officers are British.
On a slightly amusing note as we boarded Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess in Sydney last year, another passenger looked at the red ensign and informed his partner that Hamilton was a large sea port in the south of England!
