In the November 2011 issue of Sea Breezes, Liz Corlett of the Isle of Man enquired about a piece of cabin furniture she had discovered.
She will be interested to know that four out of the eight cabins in the officers accommodation of the mv Balmoral are fitted with almost identical compactums (as I believe they were called).
In the process of time since Balmoral was built in Southampton, over 60 years ago, all but one of the washbasins have disappeared although the mirrors are still in place as are the fold-away desk tops. The style is utilitarian and almost Victorian but there are no marks of makers’ identification. Such furniture must have disappeared by now except in areas where old ferries and passenger ships were broken up. If the Balmoral’s accommodation below is us updated – as it really deserves to be – I will endeavour to safeguard these vintage fitments in situ.
