I recently rediscovered many negatives of the Jersey Mail Boats and BR cargo steamers from the 1950’s which reminded me of the pleasure I had watching the comings and goings in St Helier harbour at that time.
I thought the photographs were particularly evocative of the sense of occasion of watching departures and arrivals at that time with much use of winches and capstans before the advent of bow propellers etc. Before the advent of health and safety it was a pleasure to be able to get close to the departing boat. I also now miss the opportunity when travelling to stand outside looking forward.
The photo is of the Isle of Sark, built by Denny in 1931/2.
