WITH REGARDS TO MY ARTICLE on the ss Mapledore in the January 2011 issue of Sea Breezes, I asked if any reader could confirm identification of a monument to a young heroine, near Montreal.
Thanks for the replies which have been answered. Within days Councillor loan Richard Lord Mayor Elect of the Swansea City and County, informed me that at Varenness the Statue was indeed toa young heroine and overlooking the St Lawrence River.
Marie Madeleine Jarret de Vercheres 1678-1747. In 1691 when she was 14 years of age, Varenness was attacked by Indians who killed a number of homesteaders. Marie took charge of the fort with two soldiers who “lacked determination”.
Some old men, women and children organised the defence for some eight days until relief arrived from Montreal - see photo.
