I AM NOT A SEAFARER but having been born in Shanghai, my family and I came back to England on leave after every 5 year tour. As a result, my childhood had marvellous sea trips to and from the Far East, including going back in 1939 on Union Star via Capetown.
After the war, we were evacuated back to England from Shanghai on the Highland Chieftain, acting as a troopship for ex-internees. My National Service saw me being sent out to Hong Kong on the Asturias and back on the Empire Halladale.
Do any readers know of any publication which covered the Troopships? I would be very interested in anything about them. I was introduced to Sea Breezes some years ago, when I was researching my father-in-law’s life which included serving as a 2nd Engineer on a mid-engined tanker in the First World War. Readers were most helpful in providing photos of the ship. I have been a keen reader ever since.
