WITH REFERENCE TO THE ARTICLE IN THE JUNE 2010 Sea Breezes, ‘Abandoned Whalers Salvaged at South Georgia’, the company I worked for before retiring, Seabulk Offshore SA, had one AHTS vessel, Seabulk Condor, stationed in the Falkland Islands on charter to the MoD. At least once a year the vessel would visit South Georgia with supplies etc and various Masters and officers sent me photos of their voyages.
I attach a selection of photos of the abandoned whalers and sealers. One year the vessel made a special trip to pump out fuel oil from these vessels. In the course of my duties, when I visited the vessel in the Falklands some time after this trip, I noticed two tank containers on deck. The Master told me that they contained the fuel they had pumped from the abandoned vessels in South Georgia but could not discharge them until an agreement had been reached between various government departments as to who would pay the cost of disposal!
