Sunday 15 July 2018, the pleasure boat, Spirit of Sheppey, came across the Thames Estuary, from the Isle of Sheppey to take passengers out from Southend Pier Head to look at the wreck of the Richard Montgomery which has been in the River Thames since 1944.
The journey took around 40 mins before we reached the wreck.
We cruised around the ‘safety zone area’ of the wreck for some photo opportunities before returning to Southend Pier Head. The wreck’s masts are a very eerie sight to see, along with a sign nailed to one of the masts stating: ‘Danger – Unexploded ammunition. Do not approach or board this wreck’. The masts have become resting places for various sea birds as my photograph shows.
The trip lasts for one hour and for anyone who is interested to go out and view this Liberty Ship, please contact Island Cruises who are based in the Isle of Sheppey, Kent.
