I was interested in the article on the Clan Davidson / HMS Bonaventure in the August issue of Sea Breezes.
In 1954, I sailed on the Clan Davidson as 2nd Engineer. At that time, the wooden commemorative plaque with the medal winner’s names was in the officers’ smoke room.
The Clan Davidson was a ship much favoured by Lady Jellicoe; she liked to spend the winter months in South Africa and travelled to and fro on the Clan Davidson. Whilst in London in March 1954, The Clan Line held a reunion dinner, on board Clan Davidson for the surviving medal winners who had served on the X craft, in her days as HMS Bonaventure.
When Cayzer Irvine & Co closed down their shipping interests, they continued trading in the financial world as Caledonian Investments Ltd. In the entrance hallway of their office premises, there is a builder’s model of the Clan Davidson and the commemorative plaque with the names of the X craft medal winners. Ex Clan Line personnel are made welcome and can view these items.
