On 24 October 1981, I took the Contender Bezant 11,445grt, a RoRo cargo ship (Lloyd’s Register’s description) out of Jeddah Islamic Port.
She was a most unusual ship, owned by Sea Containers of Bermuda and built at The Breda Yard in Venice in 1981. In 1982, she was chartered by the MOD for the Falkland War and was eventually taken on by the MOD and after much work became RFA Argus A135, an Aviation Training and Casualty Receiving Ship.
It is good to see that after 36 years, she is still serving a useful purpose. As a matter of interest, on 23 August 1982, I also berthed her sister, MV Contender Argent in JIP.
I haven’t researched her future.
