I sent in a request for information about a ship lying in the Buccleugh Dock basin.
I no longer require the information as the mystery was solved when the vessel was moved up towards the Michaelson Road Bridge for a festival to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Port of Barrow.
She is the Arctic Penguin which was a museum ship at Inveraray. She has been towed down to Barrow which will be her new location after being restored into a sea going ship with a schooner rig at a yard on the Wirral. Although the ship needs work done on her, I was informed that the hull was sound and hasn’t taken in water.
The Arctic Penguin was originally built as the Lightship Penguin for the Irish lights. She was later sold and converted to a youth adventure sea training ship and renamed Halloween, then sold to a new owner to be converted to a three-masted schooner and re-named Arctic Penguin. Sadly, she hit a submerged rock and sank to be subsequently salvaged. She became part of the Maritime Heritage Centre at Inverary until recently. I have attached a couple of photos.
