I have just read ‘River of Memories’ in the November 2016 issue of Sea Breezes and appreciate your nostalgic view.
I was a BP engineer apprentice (1961-1968) and spent my pre-sea training in Swan Hunter, Wallsend during January to August 1963, whilst living in Cullercoats.
I note you mention two vessels of significance to you, MV Peisander and the fabulous Caledonian Princess. I served on the Caledonian Princess when she relieved your ships in Stranraer, spending too much time and money in the ‘Bucks Head’. Sadly, to my thinking, I took her from Fishguard to Middlesborough via Harwich when she left us to go to Newhaven. Memories of the ‘Princess’ are many, as I was Chief Engineer on her for many years. The epic voyage of Rosslare to Holyhead (should have been Fishguard) with Master Lydgate in severe weather, I think August 1979, was just one.
