I, like most other ship lovers, was appalled when I heard of what remains of the proud paddle steamer Ryde is to be demolished.
I feared the worst when I saw her builder’s plate displayed on one of those TV Antique programmes some years ago. I have been following her demise by pictures that had been posted on the internet for some time now.
I did visit her some years ago in what turned out to be her final resting place and although she had started to get somewhat tatty, she looked remarkably intact. Unfortunately, I was unable to pursue my enquiries about her at the time. I felt that some group would come about to try and preserve her and I thought (wrongly) that she was safe at that time.
It seems such a shame that another link in this country’s maritime heritage has been allowed to slip away. So it is now the final farewell to this Queen of the Solent.
