The article on the early days of radar in the November 2015 issue of Sea Breezes, reminds me of my dad Alwyn’s description of a demonstration he attended in New York of the wonderful new invention in the late 1940s.
With high-ranking British and American officers in attendance, at the vital moment the screen failed to function. Assorted boffins in white coats failed to bring any response from the apparatus until someone suggested; “We’d better call for Joe!”
Joe, who emerged wearing a scruffy boiler suit, and puffing on a cigarette, took one look at the screen and gave it an almighty thump with his fist (now known as "percussive maintenance", Ed.), whereupon the display sprang into life!
