With regard to Andrew Bell’s account of the expensive saga of the SNS Konigsberg.
In case it might be of interest as an appendix, following her scuttling, the Konigsberg’s guns were removed and two of them were sent by rail to Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika where they were installed on the Graf von Goetzen. She patrolled the lake unopposed for a while before being scuttled herself. When she was raised eventually, it was discovered that the two guns had later been replaced by wooden mock-ups!
Much of this is recounted in Giles Foden’s book Mimi and Toutou Go Forth. Ignore the title and read an account of the astonishing journey of the Naval Africa Expedition 1915.
As a footnote, I note one of the letters refers to Queen Mary 2 on which I shall be taking a brief sail soon. Having been on board “our” Queen Mary and the magnificent Cunarder at Long Beach, I thought I should make up the set of three!
