The yarn about the Superiority (pictured) in the October 2014 issue of Sea Breezes was especially interesting as I had Everards last dry-cargo vessel of that name, 3,200t dwt, 300ft long and all yellow.
What really caught my eye was the reference to ‘three deck officers’.
By the time I retired in 1998, and well before that, we were reduced to a complement of six in the ‘modern’ Superiority – master, mate, three deck hands and one engineer. The engineer was the only Briton except for myself.
Very hard to stay awake doing watch but at least when the weather was bad we were watching the timber deck cargo – too hard to fall asleep!
Very happy to retire.
