I think that everyone remembers their first ship, and with the passage of time, even fondly, given that it was our home and workplace, sometimes for years.

Baron Herries So it was most pleasurable to see Captain Robert Fullerton’s entertaining story ‘Stone the Crows’ in the April 2014 edition of Sea Breezes with the splendid photographs of the ss Baron Herries in which I also served for almost two years in 1958-9 as apprentice.

As our ship has had several articles published about her in the past by Captain Fullarton and Roger Jones (four years apprenticeship 1952-1956) it has enabled me to correspond with two former Hungry Hogarth’s apprentices from which I get much pleasure as there are no seafarers that I know of where I live.

I have also recently enjoyed contact with a former tramp-ship apprentice in New Zealand, all through the good offices of your excellent magazine, so this is just a little note to say thank you and please keep up the good work.
