The article ‘Fixing the Light’ in the January 2014 edition of Sea Breezes refers. The photo states ‘Clan Cumming, ex Empire Gunfleet’. The Clan Cumming was built as the Clan Cumming, the Empire Gunfleet became the Clan Mackay.
Whilst enjoying the article very much, I would just like to make a couple of points.
1. This old girl had survived war service. In fact she was launched 3 May 1946 and completed 15 August 1946. Nearly a year after the war ended.
2. Another master with a rather nervous disposition. Anyone at sea in the late forties and fifties knew that many of the senior officers then at sea, had just been through so much strife that it was no wonder that many of them showed it in so many ways. You accepted it and thanked the Lord it hadn’t been you.
In lighter mood, if Scotland achieves its independence next year, they’ll wish the Scottish Navy was still in existence!
