Vigilant, as a motor barge recently out of trade, was purchased jointly by three persons, a hydrographic surveyor, a geophysicist and a geologist. During her sailing and racing days she was based at Maldon during the summer months with a winter berth on the Thames at Platts Ayat, Sunbury. This necessitated lowering all gear as low as possible to pass under Hammersmith Bridge, sometimes with only inches to spare.
For several years sponsorship was obtained from Securicor which required the barge to berth in St Katherine’s Dock on several occasions each year and to display the Securicor’s logo in the topsail.
During her racing years she was skippered by the well known and respected Captain Mick Lungly.
The bent sprit occurred during her second visit to Holland. The first visit she sailed across the Ijselmeer and into the Friesland canals. After being sold in 1991 she then languished in Ransomes Dock as a houseboat. I attach photos of when bought out of trade and in her sailing days alongside Ena in Ipswich Dock after passage race.
