IN PETER NEWALL’S monumental and defi nitive book, Cunard Line, there is reference to the Cunard Parthia (3) losing her rudder and lower half of her rudder stock and wrecking her steering gear in heavy weather in the Atlantic on 23 February 1966. She was subsequently towed to Southampton by the tug Foundation Vigilant.
I took the enclosed photos of the ship and remaining upper section of her rudder stock at the James Watt Dock Greenock.
Unfortunately I did not show her lower stern or date the photo. My question is; was she towed to Greenock, and where was the repair carried out? Possibly if she had a Hastie’s steering gear she could well have been repaired there.
