THE FORMER GULL LIGHT VESSEL, was for many years the Thurrock Yacht Club’s clubhouse. However, the vessel fell into disrepair and became derelict, after they had a new clubhouse built on the adjacent land, at Grays on the north bank of the Thames, near Tilbury docks.
The lightmast was removed from the vessel in 2009 and was refurbished by FT Marine in Manningtree, Essex. After fitting a new solar powered - PLA approved - light, the 70 ft high mast was installed at the yacht club last week, by Small & Co of Lowest oft. The official ‘Switch-On’ was performed by the Thurrock Mayor, Cllr Yash Gupta. Also present was Sir Jeremy de Halpert of Trinity House and Cllr Joy Redsell, who was the prime motivator of this heritage project. Many organisations; such as the Port of Tilbury, the Veolia Mardyke Trust and npower, contributed to the project as did many local individuals.
