IN 1955 I WAS ON Zini, an Elder Dempster Liberty Ship on a cleaning berth in Bremen before leaving lightship to load in London.
The European deck crew, having an evening off, had a whip-around and told the, not-too-bright, peggy to go to the nearest shop (about 1 mile away) and bring back a dozen bottles of Becks Beer. About an hour later the peggy came back and said that they didn’t have Becks Beer. He was told to go back and if they didn’t have Becks then to buy anything. An hour later he returned with a bar of soap saying “You did say buy anything”.
